莫桑比克政府宣布从即日起全面禁止原木出口

周四，莫桑比克土地环境与农村发展部长CELSO CORREIA宣布，莫桑比克自即日起全面禁止原木出口，并禁止采伐铁木等珍稀树种。以上两种禁令分别持续2年和5年。据报道，莫桑比克森林面积每年减少21.9万公顷，仅2012年，该国失去了62.7万立方米的树木。

(2015-11-26) The government hasbanned all exports of raw timber logs for the next two years, and suspended thelogging of certain species such as the ironwood tree, a favourite of charcoalproducers, for five years.

The measure is part of the forestry reform programme presented yesterday at apress conference in Maputo by the Minister of Land, Environment and RuralDevelopment, Celso Correia.

Correiabelieves that the approved package of measures will help arrest the highdeforestation levels in the country. The measure comes into effect immediatelyand forestry operators will be monitored rigorously to ensure they comply withthe rules.

The minister further explained that the reform is reinforced by the suspensionof new permits for logging, both simple and forest concession regimes.

The minister said that the species logging bans are expected to remain in placefor at least five years, and stresses that this is a measure targeted not onlyat forestry but at the sustainable development of the country as a whole.

“In real terms, we intend to ensure conservation and the sustainable use offorest resources. Meanwhile, from the economic point of view, we intend toincrease the contribution of forestry to national and local economicdevelopment through promoting and favouring the export of semi-finished orfinished forestry products,” he said.

Mozambique is seeing annual deforestation of around 0.58 percent, or 219,000hectares per annum. In 2012, the country lost 627,000 cubic meters of forest,reports O País.
